How to avoid problems when surfing?

Not all browsers are equal and thus each have their own unique issues. Unfortunately myths are spread by politicians to show their own opinion in a less than worthy position over reality. This leaves those who rely on truth for best performance in some confusion. Please discard other opinions and rely on your own council. This one action will save you many wasted hours.

The latest versions of FF, IE, Chrome and Safari in their default settings all handle surfing without difficulty. Opera's implementation of JavaScript means that some screens may look odd but this does not impede surfing.

All browsers suffer memory degradation over time. Don't forget to close down any unwanted tabs or browser windows before you start. If you are using a PC with low memory or that has experienced problems surfing in the past don't forget to restart your browser and remember to surf from a single tab. For more information on browser memory issues check this report from dot net perls

However ALL browsers suffer through lack of memory. If your PC is overloaded with software and drivers, is out of date, low on RAM then you will have problems and some browsers will perform better than others. Experimentation will help you find the solution for your environment.

All versions of Firefox use a lot of memory, to some extent this is why it performs better than other browsers, they load everything into memory so it's available when needed. However if you have lots of programs (or browser tabs open) then your PC will not leave much for additional requirements, such as the code used to block frame breakers. If you have experienced 'locked' screens or frozen tabs this is most likely the reason. In this situation it is better to surf with only one browser window open and on a single tab.

Internet Explorer 8 is a godsend over it's predecessor and it too can experience similar memory issues to Firefox (though not as serious). However it provides better control over JavaScript with code in the focus page having priority over that in the frame which means there is less likely to be code interrupting the smooth running of the surfbar. Unfortunately added flexibility means that some experienced webmasters knowing their site may appear in TE's add code in the hope it does interrupt the process. You are protected against this but it may fail if you have memory issues. The solution is to surf with a single browser and tab open.

There are few reports of issues with Safari and if it wasn't for it's occasional problematic rendering it would probably be a reliable browser to surf with.

The same goes for Chrome, however it is without doubt the browser that uses the least memory and is extremely efficient. It does have a rendering problem sometimes but it is the most reliable surfbar at time of writing

Opera is good, but it offers no advantages over the above at the moment. However Opera has an uncanny way of "doing things better" than it's competitors and each release is innovative so who knows, by the time you read this it maybe the one to consider.

So in general...

If you are a browser politician then stick with your choice, neither I nor your spouse will change you. If you could care less then try other browsers, they all have advantages.

To improve surfing limit the number of browser windows and tabs to just one. Unload programs that are not required to increase the memory and if you still experiencing issues reboot your PC.? Investigate any memory resident programs and services that you no longer need and remove any no longer required.? This will make a surprising improvement to the entire performance of your PC and programs in general.
